One line of evidence that could be pursued is a comparison of hypothesized art works of Mars with corresponding known images in terrestrial art. In this case it would be photographic art. Though we make no effort here to verify the photographic images used as representing well known terrestrial forms, that could easily be done, and one could be excused for scientific sloppiness in this area.
The first image is a juxtaposition of the Mars Prometheus interpretation with two weight lifters. Note the relative proportions of head to torso, muscular structure (anatomy), relative positioning of secondary features, and so on.
The second image is a mosaic of women’s faces juxtaposed with (old) Mars Barbara and a number of women of various ages but in the same or similar pose, or of similar face shape (physiognomy), and relative positioning of the secondary features. Note similar forehead, hairline, and cheekbones. Only young Barbara has eyes and nose similar to her Martian counterpart.

Man it's been a long time since I looked at this thread. I still lean towards non-artificiality in this debate, but I can say one thing for certain: Some of the selections here would make GREAT pieces of art! Framing was a great idea neil.

The idea of framing was only to underscore the images. But thanks. Frames can be appropriate for works of art, which I think some of these are.

Here are some more MRO "faces from the chasmas." So far, many look more pareidolic under hi-res, but some still hold promise. Science isn't science if it’s not falsifiable. I’d be willing to change my opinion, or at least add a lot more doubt to the artificiality hypothesis, if all of the now well known faces and objects we know of (see Clean Copies thread) look much more like natural structures under hi-res. I’d especially like to see “wrecked ship,” Nefertiti,” “Clown,” “Greta,” “Crownface,” "Easter Island Man," and a few others under good .25m/p resolution MRO confirmation images.

I promoted one of the above faces to the status of probable art for reasons of detail, proportion, shading, human-like rendition, and possible construction marks. Again we have a mosaic in play with faces at multiple scales. A noticeable, but more pareidolic looking face about 3 times larger than Kahn is just above and to the right. (It may be seen in the link.) On a smaller scale, a mask-like face makes up the chin area of Kahn (seen in previous post). The same very straight line outlines the top of the mask’s nose and the bottom of Kahn’s nose. Other outline/construction marks can be discerned by the viewer.
As usual, natural terrain makes up a large part of these faces, which is the main reason the argument from pareidolia has so much force. But I believe the artists almost always used the natural terrain and enhanced it, sometimes in ingenious ways. For example, Kahn’s “hair” is a shaded area made by a natural outcropping in this 3:PM (local time) image. As the sun sets, his hair/headpiece will get bigger, reaching the ridge just above and to the right. Here’s image and key, framed and labeled.

This profile sculpture (shown previously) is a stylized interpretation of a human-like face with the suggestions of secondary features and construction marks, but in this hi-res MRO image we see clean lines, striations for hair and beard, but no striations in face area; it is well proportioned and like most faces, north oriented. Once again the natural terrain appears to have been modified by the artist; this is most evident in the top frontal area where a natural ridge appears to have been cut away.
