And there's nothing wrong with that either. In fact it's the only way to learn about a topic you know nothing about to begin with. I'm willing to challenge my own biases, and pursue leads that might contradict my previous assumptions. Tom clarified at least part of the issue about the dust storms. While you are probably breathing a huge sigh of relief because another potential thorn in your theory has been removed, I have no emotional reaction to it one way or another, because I'm not invested in the outcome.
You want to believe that the images were tampered with in a political cover-up of Martian artifacts. That is a possibility. I do not dismiss anything outright, but if you want to ascertain whether that is true you have to rule out all the other possibilities, and I am helping you do that by bringing up other possible explanations for the low-contrast. You should thank me for being "all over the playing field."
In the end it's probably what Tom is saying, simply cost-saving bandwith.
And by the way, this dog looks much better than Rin Tin Tin. It has more detail and comes from the much-higher resolution MRO. What does it say about Rin Tin Tin that dog profiles can be found other places on Mars?

This is a respectful challenge to your theory. If you can refute it rationally, it strengthens your case, so you shouldn't get upset with me for bringing it up. Again, the challenge is my contention that profiles (of dogs or humans or other animals) are very eaily conjured by the human mind, because our minds are conditioned to see faces, and because profiles do not need to have symmetry. With no symmetry, there are bound to be "profiles" all over the place.

Nothing really. All you've done is introduce another questionable Darth Vader Head in dog format, into the mix. It may or may not add any value to the discussion. But it would be helpful if you posted the link to the raw data.

Perhaps it would help everyone if every posted picture were to include the raw link and perhaps even the details used in the photo-enhancement. The high amount of material coming in now can get overwhelming too, so pace yourselves folks so that no one blows a gasket

Here's the link. It's from the brand new MRO image, just released yesterday:

emanuel (and others),
(If you haven't already,) you can also go back to your post (where the actual picture is) and edit it to include the link. Not required, but it would be nice.

Thanks Larry. I went back and added the link. And while we're at it, here is another profile from the same strip:
www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/multimedia/pia08049.html
And here is a profile from strip #S0100652, which I have posted before.
Both these profiles I found by doing cursory scans of the image strips. They are both (like the new MRO dog) easily as detailed and proportionally correct as the new profiles in the Nefertiti area. They are in no way "Darth Vader-like." They are as reaslistic-looking as the man facing Nefertiti, and even superior to Rin Tin Tin and the woman below Neferiti. (Take a close look at the S0100652 image and you can even make out an eyelash, for example. And in the MRO profile, look at the perfectly formed lips and the iris inside the eye socket. None of these appear in Nefertiti's family.)
To me, this subtracts from the artificiality hypothesis, unless we are to believe that there are so many profiles all over Mars that my cursory search ended up revealing three more! Much more likely is that profiles are one of the easier types of images to "re-cognize" in Rorschach-like images, because of the way our minds work.
This, for right now, is what I am inclined to think. Of course, I am open to new ideas and information that would change my mind... even if Neil gets upset again if I do.
