i agree with you,i mean the same thing is happening with cold fusion, there getting no funding to further this field and the implications for this research is purvasive.
genetic engineering i think is great but of course its open to abuse.sometimes i think the only way humankind learns is the hard way.between power, money and ego its hard for those who try to make reasonable and good choices and the public does not alot of the time have the information needed to make a reasonable choice.

North,
Your comment about the public not being informed enough to have the opportunity to make the right choices is right on the mark. It is one of the unfortunate results of there being way too much secrecy and too many things going on the public knows absolutely nothing about.
I have been under the impression for some time that there is an ongoing, concerted effort to increasingly restrict what the public is allowed to know about. The shutdown of the PubScience site by the department of energy last year was a huge loss for researchers, scientists, teachers and anyone else who was interested in science.
The government has asked scientists not to publish their research papers in some cases. Many information sites on the web that used to be free now charge exorbitant amounts of money just to read a research paper or have access for 24 hours.
Yesterday someone told me that Ashcroft had suggested a fine of some type for newspapers or media if they published or said something the administration didn't like (Maybe my friend was putting me on, this suggestion is so outrageous I can hardly believe Ashcroft actually said this).
But then alot of very strange and outrageous things have been happening lately.
The theft of over 50,000 priceless artifacts, many weighing hundreds of pounds, from the Baghdad museum and the torching of the Koranic library are immense tragedies and represent a huge removal of priceless knowledge from public access. I find it shocking that these priceless treasures were not guarded by our military.
As J. Burke so succinctly put it the loss is on the level of the Burning of the libraries of Alexandria.
It looks to me like there is information that a certain group does not want to fall into the hands of the general public. I suspect this information has to do with the history and origins of humankind and how human society has been secretly controlled and exploited for millinea by this same "certain group".

I can't rate the Library at Alexandria with the Baghdad calamity. There are probably numerous photographic records of stolen or destroyed tablets around the world but there were NO copies of what was at Alexandria. Plus the U.S. troops didn't drag out the manuscripts and use them to fuel the public baths as the Romans did with Alexandria. How do you expect the Army to protect anything when a war is going on? It was a very tragic event to be sure.
I find your comment about secrecy interesting considering that I can't think of a time in history when the average person has had such easy access to incredible amounts of information. NASA is far less secretive about its information than Tycho Brahe was about his! If there is a secret society running the world for centuries I would have to say that they have pretty lousy control. I don't see how NASA or anyone else could filter information forever, we have no control over what other countries point their telescopes or probes at.

Jeremy,
This happened when we were already occuping Baghdad. What do you mean how could we protect anything with a war going on? Lots of other things were protected, like the Ministry of Oil building which could be replaced if it were damaged (unlike the priceless artifacts which cannot be replaced at any cost).
I don't agree with you that there is more information available for the general public then there ever has been. The shutdown of PubScience alone is a huge loss. Lots of info that used to be available on the net is now gone or it can only be accessed by paying exorbitant amounts of money. I recently wanted to access a research paper and found that I would have to pay 35.00 just to read it. This from a site where I used to be able to read research papers for free. The government has asked scientists not to even publish their research papers in certain areas.
Secret technology has advanced to a phenomenal point beyond the knowledge or comprehension of the common man. Everything from mind control technology, the engineering of the environment, engineering of diseases, secret space missions, sonic technology, anti-gravity craft (which I believe our government has the use of). I do not think there has ever been such a huge gap between what the government knows about and what the general population is informed of.
In some cases the public is not even being given the information it needs to protect itself from the effects of ongoing government programs. In recent months I have seen headlines
on three seperate occasions about the off-the-charts increases in asthma rates and respiratory illnesses with no satisfactory reason given as to why these increases are occuring. These skyrocketing asthma rates coincide with when the chemtrails dumping of massive amounts of metal particulates into the atmosphere began. These metal particulates are now in the atmosphere in such huge quantities that on most days the perceived color of the sky has been changed from the pre-chemtrails deep blue to a washed out much whiter looking blue. The fall-out from the chemtrails dumping shows up on windshields and in the filters for aircleaners. Of course the metal particulates are getting into our lungs and wrecking havoc.
In my mind these metal particulates are obviously implicated as a primary cause of the asthma epidemic. And will undoubtedly be the primary cause of an increase in many other illnesses as well as the nano-particles of metal are fine enough to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream from the lung wall. If people were informed this was going on at least they might have a fighting chance to protect themselves through the use of air filters, or even face masks.
The Moon missions were televised live. But not anything having having to do with Mars. In fact we have to wait to see images until after they have been scrutinized, sometimes waiting months
while the images languish at JPL. I have a long list of Mars Images that were released in the first image dump of 30,000 images that seem to have been removed as I can no longer find them at the NASA image gallery.
And the media has becomes increasingly controlled. Consider Donald Rumsfield's recent remarks about fining the media if it reports anything the White House doesn't like. Where does this fit in with a general public that needs to be informed through a free press and free speech? It seems more like we are being managed than fully informed.
I think the general trend is clearly for there to be less information available to the general public. And it appears this policy is being enacted right down to the grade school level with the development of critical thinking, logic and science skills being de-emphasized. From my own recent experience with educational systems I can tell you that what passes for a science class these days is pathetic. Outdated science books containing completely erroneous information. Teachers that are so poorly educated themselves that they don't understand basic scientific concepts and therefore are instructing students incorrectly.
No way is there more information out there than ever. Unless of course you are thinking about the rapidly expanding information base the government is amassing on each and every one of us through DARPA'S Total Information Access program and the ongoing installation of systems, satellites and supercomputers that monitor just about every aspect of our lives.

This is an interesting point Jeremy. Now that the Chinese have expressed an active interest in pursuing Mars exploration I am really curious to see if this will result in the announcement of discoveries being speeded up at NASA. I can hardly imagine that NASA will allow a situation to develop where another country is claiming credit for making discoveries they already know about.
On the other hand just because a discovery is made by a scientist from another country does not mean it will be acknowledged. I am thinking specifically of the discovery of the large Planet by JP Murphy on the outskirts of our solar system. His abstract was originally available at the RAF site. Then the abstract was removed (at least I couldn't find a way to access it) and a press release was in it's place which suggested that it wasn't really a planet and was just a large comet. But when I queried JP Murphy by email about the discrepency he replied that it most definately was a planet.
This kind of scenario makes it appear something is being covered up.
