A few comments, to help us keep things in perspective. A forest is made of trees - look at both separately but do not forget about the other.

Jim, disolved minerals change (sometimes radically) the melting and boiling points of some substances, including water. And the low pressure of the Martian atmosphere radically reduces the efficiency of the CO2 greenhouse efffect.

Malcolm, a surface reflection can look just like transparency under some conditions. Although liquids are the most likely likely cause of a surface reflection they are not the only possibility. And if Mars is actually not red up close, why does it look red in my telescope. (NASA can't be causing that.)

Zip, thank you for your review of Malcolm's video. He makes some very strong claims about the obviousness of at least one thing he sees there (but perhaps I'm misunderstanding his claim). Are you sure you have not seen "it", something obviously not natural?

We are pretty informal here - first names are OK.

Yes, there is a forward slash in the second tag. HTLM tags are used in pairs to tell an editor to modify the text between the tags rather than present it as normal text. The first tag is usually a letter between an open square bracket and a close square bracket. The second tag is the same, but with a forward slash prefixing the letter. The letter b is used to create bold text. The letter i is used to create italicized text.

Example: [_b_]text[_/_b_]

(I have spaced things out using underscore characters to force the editor to treat the tags as text instead of a command.

Here is that same example with the underscore characters removed:
Example: <b>text</b>

Note that some editors use other punctuation characters to designate a tag.

&lt;b&gt;some text that you want to be bold&lt;/b&gt; does not work in this this editor, but it does in some others. Most editors you find online these days have some ability to use HTML tags.

The tag that allows you to post a link to an image on another computer is a three letter tag 'img' rather than a one letter tag like 'b' or 'i'.

Tags can almost any length a programmer wants them to be. But she has to tell the rest of us if she wants us to know how to use it. And programers usually like things to be short.
