In the color photo, the ground surface and "rocks" appear to have a yellow, frosted look. This is how methane hydrate would appear. A possibility is that incoming meteors would momentarily and locally heat the atmosphere and ground surface. Thus, a momentary presence of water vapor in close contact with methane vapor, could lead to the snow like deposit of methane hydrate on all surfaces. Just speculation.
