Thanks, north. I think Mac was either trying to trivialize my point, or it went completely over his head. Either interpretation is telling and neither is flattering.

North & JRich,
You have the answer, however don't blame me for your initial mistake north.
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><b>when dividing $25.00 by 3 they actually get back $8.33 not $9.00,the <font color="red"> $0.33</font id="red"> is your missing $1.00!!</b><hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
What was missing was the 0.66 2/3 cents not -.33. 3 x 0.6666 = $2.00
$25 + 2 = 27 = 3 x 9.

mathematician i'm not, don't pretend to be,but i still found the hole in your problem, even if i went about it differently.why though the knowingly flawed argument??!!
i'm responsible for myself thankyou,no blame would have or has been issued and i didn't appreciate the implication.

No ill will intended. Actually I think you got caught in the middle. My riddle was posted as a counter to JRich's lines:
JR:<blockquote id="quote"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><b>You agree to disagree, but before leaving he asks if you have change for a $20 bill. You give him two $1 bills and tell him to prove that he's been shortchanged.</b><hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
AND
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><b>Thanks, north. I saw the above as a poke at me which I don't see as being justified other than by the fact the he and I seem to disagree about something.
As I stated you indeed were on the right track and I used that just to throw in another mis-method of calculating the issue to add more confusion.

Don't see how it counters anything. I was not presenting a math puzzle. However, now that I understand your debating technique I will be sure to exclude any reference to <b>doors</b> in the future for fear of prompting a knock-knock joke.

You are quite perceptive. However, I now see that I was mistaken. My possible explanations for your riddle post are not mutually exclusive.

Well, if you speak in terms of money "missing", north's first
answer is as good as yours I believe, although it didn't
quite fit the wording of the problem. There's actually no
missing dollar so 33 cents or 66 cents would both be wrong
answers anyway. Jrich's answer is more correct since he/she
acknowledged the fact that no money was missing.
I think this is a good example of the problem with SR however.
The missing dollar is a result of combining two opposing starting
assumptions to deduct a conclusion. One assumption is that
$30 was the original amount paid, while the second (although hidden)
assumption was that the original amount paid was $28.
