I here what you are saying PhilJ. Perhaps I misconstrued your zeal for your argument. I have trouble with viewpoints that are inconsistent with evidence and unyielding or purposefully circular to avoid change. I work with a science teacher who continues to teach that the earth is 6000 years old and that men and dinosaurs coexisted. Talk to ya'll later, Mark

Phil and Mark...you guys are funny...this is not a put down...but evidently, if you even see the word "GOD", you go goofy.
If you read this entire thread, you will see that Larry and I were having a completely scientific discussion and even politely agreed to disagree!
Phil...you even edited one of your responses...taking out the part where you asked us to leave if we couldn't be tolerant and polite. We were definitely being both and your next response saying so was very appropriate...thank you for that.
Gentleman, all I am suggesting is that responding the way you did, was putting into the thread, the very thing you were objecting to...religion and politics...anyway no harm no foul and thanks for participating...we need as much of that as possible,,,infact you could respond to the very first post on this thread ;)

I agree with Phil when he says that BB or MM is a matter of religion.
The scientific way is to take all possible scenario's into account... come up with an experiment... scratch the back of your head when the results turn out to be the opposite of what you were trying to prove.

I did not go nutso because god was mentioned. Although, I do not post regulary (mostly because I don't have time to reply everyday) I do read every message posted. Russ and Phil the conversation is great, Larry and I get short on the God subject because of the extreme problems that the topic has caused for the board in the past. We get some folks who are of extreme religious views who can get very nasty, very quick. Likewise other folks of the science extreme have replied. A degenerative melee of usefulness continued. I was asked to reply to the intent of this thread. Galaxy Distribution was the theme...not existence. That is another thread. If all users would agree to keep the existence question into one thread perhaps entitled "Existence!," then I will agree not to interfere. It just that the topic always starts fights and I get tired of refereeing them in several different forums. Please understand my reasoning. Thanks, Mark

btw, why can't we see light from every point in the sky if galaxies are spread across eternity?

Cosmological redshift prevents light to be seen over large distances. The cosmic background radiation, however, is a kind of light coming from every direction.

Mark...it was Larry and I that were having the conversation. My last post on this matter stands. Enough. I will say this...The key to figuring out the universe is...figuring out how the Baryonic Matter gets here!!!

[Mark}..."btw, why can't we see light from every point in the sky if galaxies are spread across eternity?"

This is Obler's Paradox and is answered in many places on the net. I'm not sure I can get all the science right on this so you should look it up.

I don't know if the universe is "static",(forever)...I think it is more likely that it had a begining, but even if it were forever, the simple answer to not being able to see light from every point in the night sky, is luminosity. For every 1 star we can see (with the naked eye), there are 100 closer to us that we can't see! Luminosity and magnitude, I believe the terms are.
