That's true. But I've often said that's what makes this the ideal case to study.
On Earth, if we see an image on a mountain wall for instance, we can go there an look at it closely. If it disappears up close, or we see why we thought it was a face, we know how to interpret it. If it persists up close, it means some indigent people etched it.
Since we can't prove anything on Mars, apparently, we are really getting to a subject that may never have been explored this deeply before.
