General and Author Information

The Meta Research Bulletin (MRB) is published four times a year, about mid-month in March, June, September, and December. The publisher is Meta Research, Inc. The editor and author of all articles not otherwise credited is astronomer Tom Van Flandern. Editing assistance provided by John Bailey <JBailey@ida.org>. Articles in this Bulletin are considered to have the same status as preprints, so permission to reprint articles will usually be given upon request as long as the source is acknowledged.

Pertinent articles and discussion of published articles are welcome. Preferred formats are: Microsoft Word, RTF, or ASCII. Appropriateness for this Bulletin is at the discretion of the editor; but if accepted, articles will be published without significant editing of content, except for constraints on overall length. A response by the editor or a referee may then also be published. The first author is shown any such response and offered the opportunity to adjust his contribution in the light of the response. If time permits, this process is iterated until all parties are satisfied. Until the publication deadline, authors have the option to defer publication to a later issue to complete this process.

Subscription and books information

In 2006, subscriptions to the Bulletin are $17 per year (4 issues). Subscriptions are included as a benefit of membership for Supporting Members ($25/yr), Sustaining Members ($50/yr) and Patron Members ($100/yr). We presently make no surcharge for postage for sending the MRB to foreign subscribers, but we especially encourage them to choose a membership category to help cover postage costs. Single back issues of the bulletin may be purchased for $5 each (non-members) or $2 each (members). Subscriptions may be upgraded to a membership category at any time during the year by paying the difference. Out-of-print volumes 1-3 are available on-line only to members only for $12.

Extended Meta-notes by E-mail (EME) is an extensive list of short summaries and pointers to noteworthy papers in the journals. These are sent electronically about Nov. 15, Feb. 15, May 15, Aug. 15, and are free upon request to Sustaining and Patron Members. Supporting Members may elect to receive either EME or MRB as their membership benefit. The EME Master File, a compendium of such notes extending back to 1992, and all MRB back issues on-line are available free to any current Patron Member.

Meta Research

Meta Research, Inc. is a scientific non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation run by a 7-member Board of Directors. It was founded in 1991 in response to the broad problem of getting support to do research on promising but unpopular alternative ideas in astronomy that have trouble getting funded from the usual sources. The organization supports and encourages research or observations in connection with astronomical theories that are in accord with observations and experiment, add insight or understanding, and make testable predictions; but that are not otherwise supported solely because they lie outside of the mainstream of the field of Astronomy.

The name “Meta” (pronounced with a short “e”) comes from the dictionary meaning of that prefix: “later or more highly organized or specialized form of; more comprehensive; transcending; used with the name of a discipline to designate a new but related discipline designed to deal critically with the original one.”

Membership and other contributions to Meta Research, over and above the $17 annual cost of the Bulletin, are tax deductible in the United States.

Our office hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific Time. Some news, animations, technical papers, EME notes, and special offers appear only on the web sites; others only in the MRB. Our expeditions are led by Meta Research astronomers. For eclipses, we go to near the edge of the path of totality, where the view is most spectacular. Plans for future expeditions are on hold. Check the “Expeditions” tab at our web site, or go directly to <http://eclipseedge.org>, to learn of such plans, which may develop on short notice because of the complexities of the present world situation, or because of unexpected astronomical developments.
